What is ADHD?

Many children who come to our practice are suspect for Attention Deficit Disorder, with or without hyperactivity. ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder is one of the most commonly diagnosed behavioral disorders in children, a label now given to 8.7% of children between the ages of eight and 15. The DSM-IV divides ADHD into three basic subtypes. The first group is characterized predominantly by inattention, the second predominantly by impulsivity and hyperactivity, and the third group is the combined or mixed type.

My former Resident and good colleague, Dr. Carole Hong, co-authored an extensive article with me that reviews many of the pertinent issues, including other childhood behavioral disorders that can occur together with ADHD.
