THE VISION AND LEARNING CENTER

The Vision and Learning Center at Family Eyecare Associates is a place where children and adults can find help in using their vision to its fullest potential. Learning is accomplished through complex and interrelated processes, one of which is vision. The Vision and Learning Center is directed by Dr. Leonard J. Press, an Optometric physician board certified in visual perception and development.

The trans-disciplinary approach of the Vision and Learning Center has been shaped by our consultants:
Vision: Leonard J. Press, O.D., Daniel J. Press, O.D.
Reading: P. Suzanne Hollar, M.A.
Learning: Jane A. Petrozzino, Ph.D.
Psychology: James Battaglia, Ph.D.
Biofeedback: Geraldine Fee, Ph.D.
Audiology: Dorinne S. Davis, M.A., CCC-A

The goal of the Vision and Learning Center is to provide parents with one location where they can get effective solutions to untreated vision problems interfering with school performance. When visual performance is optimal, educational and other interventions are more effective. We collaborate with occupational therapists and give in-services and seminars to educators.

The following is a summary from the Joint Organizational Policy Statement on Vision, Learning and Dyslexia, from the American Academy of Optometry and the American Optometric Association:

  • People at risk for learning-related vision problems should be evaluated by an optometrist who provides diagnostic and management services in this area.

  • The goal of Optometric intervention is to improve visual function and alleviate associated signs and symptoms.

  • Prompt remediation of learning-related vision problems enhances the ability of children and adults to perform to their full potential.

  • People with learning problems require help from many disciplines to meet the learning challenges they face. Optometric involvement constitutes one aspect of the multidisciplinary management approach required to prepare the individual for lifelong learning.
